Muslin is popular in baby textiles because it is lightweight, soft and practical for everyday use. The first rule for preserving the look and feel of any product is to follow its own care label. Two products made from a similar fabric can still have different stitching, prints or attached parts, so one washing rule does not fit everything.
Check the care label first
The symbols on the product label take priority for washing temperature, spin, drying and ironing. If the product page also gives care instructions, consider them together with the label.
Why are lower temperatures often preferred?
For many cotton and muslin products, a lower temperature such as 30°C can help preserve colour and fabric structure. If your product label specifies another temperature, follow the label.
Do not use more detergent than needed
Too much detergent can leave residue in fibres. Use a dose appropriate for the wash load and follow the detergent manufacturer's instructions. Do not use bleach or strong chemicals unless the care label specifically allows them.
Do not overload the machine
A load that allows muslin to move freely can reduce unnecessary friction. When washing with products that have zippers or hook-and-loop fasteners, consider the risk of snagging the fabric.
Check the drying method
Tumble drying depends on the care label. If it is not suitable, lay the product flat or hang it to dry naturally. Very high heat can increase shrinkage or shape changes in cotton products.
What can happen after the first wash?
Natural cotton fabrics can show slight dimensional change or a fuller texture after early washes. Avoid exposing them to unnecessarily hot water or high heat.
Storage
Once completely dry, fold and store the product in a dry, ventilated place. Textiles kept damp in a closed space for long periods can develop odours and moisture-related problems.
