A common mistake when choosing a play tent is to look only at width. The footprint, overall height, entrance direction and movement space around the product should all be considered together.
Mark the footprint on the floor
First check the width and length. Mark those dimensions on the child's room floor with masking tape. This shows the actual occupied area without moving furniture first.
Do not forget the height
A tent or playhouse can clash with a window, shelf, wall decoration or sloping ceiling. A product may fit on the floor but still be unsuitable because of its height. For house-shaped models, always consider the highest point.
Leave room at the entrance
Placing the entrance too close to a wall or piece of furniture limits use. Leave enough room for the child to enter and exit and for an adult to reach the inside when needed.
Why does cushion size matter?
A made-to-fit cushion fills the base neatly and reduces the need to search for a compatible mat later. If the cushion dimensions are listed separately, compare them with the overall footprint.
Two size examples
YHH Kids LumiTent has a 120 × 120 cm footprint. In the CasaMio playhouse, the cushion measures 117 × 81 cm and the overall height is about 127 cm. They are in the same broad category but use room space differently.
What about small rooms?
In a smaller room, placing the tent in a corner, keeping main walkways clear and limiting the number of toys around it can create a more organised layout. Models that are easy to fold away can also be helpful.
Quick checklist before buying
- Have I marked the footprint on the floor?
- Have I checked the highest point?
- Is there enough room in front of the entrance?
- Are the cushion and accessories included?
- How will the product be stored when not in use?
